Write when you can’t sleep
August 13, 2017
It’s 10:55 p.m. and I can’t go to sleep. Why is it that I go to bed thinking that I am so sleepy and can’t go to sleep. I talk to my Lord and I feel at peace, but then as I close my eyes, my grandson continues to come to mind. He’s leaving for boot camp at Parris Island a week from today and I just can’t stop thinking about that little boy that he once was. I remember when he was just beginning to walk and would come to me and bite my leg. He had a little cousin that bit all the time and maybe he got that from her. Anyhow, I had learned from a teacher in 8th grade that his donkey kept biting him and one day he bit him back, so the donkey never bit him again. I decided to try this on my grandson, well… I bit a little to hard and left marks on his arm! I felt so bad!!!! He cried, I cried and I thought that he would never have anything to do with me again after that. I explained to him that you just could not bite people, that it hurt. I asked him if it hurt when I bit him and he shook his head yes. Tears filled both his eyes and mine. I felt horrible. But you know what, he still loved me, he still ran to me when he saw me and he, I believe, respected me. He always wanted to come over and spend the night at Grandma’s. Now he’s 18 and the last thing he wants to do is spend the night at grandma’s. Oh how I wish those days were still here. Now he’s over a foot taller than I am and can pick me up like a sack of potatoes. We had family pictures made today which proves it!
His sister is 13 and they are so close. How often do you hear of an 18 year old taking his sister to the movies so he can spend time with her. She says that she’s not going to miss him, but her actions are totally the opposite. A few weeks ago he was trying to get in touch with her not knowing that she as at a friend’s house. When I picked her up she wanted to know what her brother wanted, she said that no one would tell her – that’s because he said not to tell her that he wanted to take her to a movie, he wanted to surprise her. Later on I discovered from my daughter that she was concerned that he was going to tell her that the Marine Sergeant had called to tell her brother that he was leaving earlier than anticipated. She was one relieved young lady!
Our grandson is a car lover! No joke! All he talks about is cars and trucks. He knows just about everything there is to know about them. I went with him once to a “car junkyard” to look for some parts for his car. That will not happen again. That was quite an experience for me – especially when you have to go to the bathroom! I told him that he better not ever tell anyone about that wonderful event! Well…maybe he’ll tell it at my eulogy when I pass from this world to the next. We’ve had some great laughs my grandson and I. The best picture of him smiling is when I was standing next to him and passed gas! He cracked totally up!!!! Hey, at least I got a smile from him. I love that boy. It’s so funny that when you get to be my age, it really doesn’t matter what I say – or write – It’s just the way it is. No need to make up things, no need to cover things up – it is life, REAL life!
I guess I’ll try and go get some sleep now. A couple of meetings tomorrow then hopefully a little house cleaning. You just gotta love it.
I hope someone enjoyed this. I’m thinking of writing a little blog each night. Are you interested? Let me know.
